MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who is at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the military. Despite the persistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the recklessness of her unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy, dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the two isolated from the world. That is, until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) — holed up in the family’s lakeside home — begins to lose his way and needs what he’s been denied… help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, fractured families, and the complex ways we process grief.
